Seit etwa zehn Jahren richtet sich das Interesse der Forschungen der Psychotraumatologie zunehmend auf die Theoreme der Bindungstheorie, die 1969 durch den britischen Arzt und Psychoanalytiker John Bowlby begrundet wurde.
